She has worked with clients who have eating disorders or body image struggles, individuals with difficulties at school and with socialization, those with divorced parents, social anxiety, ADHD, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and many more. Jen uses art as a form of language to help clients who may have difficulty verbalizing strong feelingsJen works with the client to create personalized treatment and goals. She sits alongside clients in their journey of hope, growth, and resilience. Jen finds Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Art Therapy (CBAT) helpful for clients who may need guidance in navigating how their thoughts, feelings, and actions are connected.

Art Therapy works for all ages!

Art therapy is not only for kids, but is exceptionally useful for adults. By engaging in art expression, while letting go of feelings of judgment, adults who do not consider themselves “good at art” can benefit from art therapy. It is about the process of creation, not the outcome. Sometimes art may involve creating line, shape, color, portraying a narrative, or expressing oneself through the use of various art media. It can be used to help contain strong emotions or open up feelings that are being suppressed. Art expression can reach deeply inward. As strong feelings emerge, Jen takes great care in guiding clients’ use of emotion-provoking and emotion-containing art media to meet each client’s unique needs. This can often lead to insights and inner changes. Through engaging in art therapy and expressive arts, metaphors and symbolism can be incorporated to allow a client to distance themselves from their struggles.  Jen takes a humanistic approach to help clients explore their wants and needs, and potentially uncover what a meaningful life means to them. Jen feels that we view our world through a lens created by our experiences, which are also influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. All dimensional aspects should be taken into consideration to provide a contextual, holistic treatment.

Get to know Jen!

Outside of the office, Jen loves traveling to the beach (especially to Lake Michigan), making jewelry, drawing, painting, collaging, and creating mixed-media art. Jen enjoys learning new art techniques, media, and processes (like Gelli printing, mosaics, fabric art, altered books/junk journals, alcohol inks, nature art, and found objects). Acknowledging that in life we learn something new every day, Jen likes to read about various disorders and treatments, as well as art therapy neuroscience. She loves watching movies, doing arts and crafts, baking, sewing, swimming, and going to parks with her five children, husband, and fluffy-tailed cat, Kirei, as well as with her dad, three sisters, their families, and friends.

Work with Jen!

Jen creates a warm, nonjudgmental environment, putting all her heart and mind into what she does to help clients. She desires to communicate with those who have communication difficulties and has much life experience to draw upon. Jen is truly caring, altruistic, and great at actively listening. Jen wants others to join her secure, empathetic space to communicate their needs, help guide them in overcoming life’s greatest challenges, and to feel confident and empowered to create the lasting change they desire. Jen takes an integrative approach, coming from both humanistic (existential) and archetypal/Jungian/imaginal approaches. She is skilled in CBT when it meets the client’s needs. If you are interested in working with her, please call 636-255-0002 or schedule through our online form.
